"It was just too much Hall"

Sixty years ago the Sugar Land Gators beat Barbers Hill 46-12 in Sugar Land to capture the UIL 28B district crown.  It was their 3rd consecutive district championship.

Barbers Hill was a perennial football power.  Note that The Houston Chronicle article mentions Gordon Speer.  He played at Rice with Bobby Williams (MCHS '53 & Dulles coach) in the '58 Cotton Bowl.    Barbers Hill would continue to field great teams through the 1950s, and Sugar Land would battle them again in post-season games later in the decade.

The Barbers Hill coach, Lloyd Kelly said, "It was just too much Hall," but the newspaper accounts say other Gators played well, too: Benny Rychlik, Mickey Kachinski, Wendell Harris, Leroy Urban, Tommy Fatheree, Billy Arnett, and James Gillis.

The newspaper photo isn't very clear, but the caption says Tommy Stubbs is shown clearing the way for Kenneth.  Sugar Land piled up 399 yards rushing and 90 yards passing.  Barbers Hill amassed 317 yards of total offense, so the teams put on quite a show for the crowd.
