Gators Swat The Yellow Jackets 60 Years Ago In Their Bi-District Contest

The Sugar Land Alligators played the Chester Yellow Jackets 60 years ago in Rosenberg to determine who'd advance to the UIL Region 7B Championship.

Back in those days, Class B schools played just two post-season games: a bi-district championship and a regional championship.  There was no sole state-wide champion for Class B schools.  I suppose there were too many for a complete playoff.

I wish this account of the game were better, but it came off microfilm.  It's incomplete because the continuation of the article is virtually illegible.  Regardless, you can see that the game was statistically closer than the score suggests.  Chester was no patsy.

Of course, Kenneth Hall carried most of the offensive load, but other players gave notable performances: Benny Rychlik, Tommy Fatheree, Mickey Kachinski, Billy Arnett, Lawrence Smith, and Tommy Stubbs.

I have a video of the game film, but it's not completely clear.  Click here to view selected plays.  Unfortunately, I forgot to credit Lawrence Smith for the fumble recovery you'll see in the clip.  It set up a quick, Hall touchdown run.

As I watch these plays I'm struck by a comment Kenneth Hall made about the Notre Dame Box.  It's all about precision and misdirection, at least that's the way Sugar Land ran it.  To my eye, it's almost as if they are running half-court basketball plays.

I'm continually hopeful that more film of Sugar Land High School football games will turn up.
