The Dulles Vikings set sail for Seguin in November 1963 to face the Hondo Owls in their regional championship game. As the newspaper clippings attest, Vikings used a strong defense to vanquish Hondo 9-0. I don't recall this game too well, so I'm fortunate to have the game film, which I'll have digitized early next year.
Anyway, Rick Kirkpatrick's (DHS '67) scrapbook contained the three newspaper accounts below. I particularly like the photos, which appeared in The Fort Bend Mirror, plus Willis Webb's article on Bill Shaver.
In other news, the Dulles band did very well in the '63 UIL marching contest.
After defeating Hondo the Vikings drew the Sinton Pirates as their quarter finals foe. Dulles lost a hard-fought game the year before. It ended in a tie, and Sinton advanced on the second tie-breaker, more first downs. Dulles now had a chance for revenge, but they were a decided underdog. Sinton had a very good team in 1963.
Rockwall faced the '62 AA state champs Jacksboro in their regional championship, but Rockwall was favored to win the game. Actually, the Dallas Morning News article below says they were a 'narrow choice' over Jacksboro.
Another Dallas Morning News article said Rockwall was gripped with football fever. I can see why, since they were on a roll and landed a coach who found instant success.
And, Rockwall had its own version of Fordham's legendary seven blocks of granite.
